John Lass is senior vice president of Strategy & Business Development for CUNA Mutual Group. In this role he directs corporate strategic planning and CUNA Mutual Group’s Business Development unit with a focus on identifying and pursuing strategic diversification opportunities.
Lass has worked extensively in the credit union system throughout the U.S. and worldwide as a speaker and strategy advisor. Previously, he headed the strategy practice at Hagberg Consulting Group, now a part of Accenture. He has also worked as a strategy consultant with the Boston Consulting Group.
Lass earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School, where he graduated as a Baker Scholar.
Dave Colby is the chief economist for CUNA Mutual Group in Madison,
Wis. His primary responsibilities include conducting strategic research,
analysis and forecasting of the financial services industry with special
emphasis on the consumer and credit union markets. Colby’s forecasts
serve as a starting point for the strategic planning process and help to
create a clearer understanding of the underlying trends and links between
the general economy, the financial services industry and CUNA Mutual
Group’s policy owners.
Colby publishes the Credit Union Trends Report, a monthly “pulse check”
on the economic state of the credit union movement. He is a founding member of the Credit Union Economics Group, which provides a broad perspective of macroeconomic and credit union trends.
Colby joined CUNA Mutual Group in 1977 as a corporate research specialist and has progressed through the organization holding various corporate, operational and strategic planning positions. His knowledge of the national economy, the consumer financial marketplace and the credit union system has led him to many corporate and industry-level task force assignments, and he is a frequent speaker at industry conferences. Colby earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. In addition, he holds the Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI) designation.
Steve Heusuk is Senior Manager, Strategy & Business Development for CUNA Mutual Group. In this role, he supports CUNA Mutual Group’s Business Development unit by providing timely, high impact market intelligence to his clients.
Heusuk has held several research-related roles since his start with CUNA Mutual Group in 2005. Previously, he served as Director of Brand Research for the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, the Blues’ trade association. He has also worked as a market researcher for the Institute of Real Estate Management, an affiliate of the National Association of Realtors.
Heusuk holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Illinois and a Master of Business Administration from Northern Illinois University.
Theran Colwell serves as Director of Strategy & Business Development for CUNA Mutual Group. He is responsible for identifying/analyzing business opportunities, enabling mergers and acquisitions, and assisting strategic planning.
Since joining CUNA Mutual, Theran has held positions throughout the organization including: Senior Manager Product Finance, Analysis Manager Corporate Development, and Senior Consultant Financial Management Services. As a consultant, he worked with credit unions on asset liability management, loan/deposit pricing, and investment accounting.
